Bringing out your natural beauty

Do you have sparse and short eyelashes? Are you tired of having to rely on false eyelashes, extensions and mascara to make your eyes stand out? You may be a good candidate for LATISSE®, the first FDA-approved treatment for sparse eyelashes.

LATISSE® is a prescription medication offered at Bespoke Rx and designed to help you grow longer, thicker and darker lashes. The product is applied daily at home for one to two months, after which time you should notice a significant improvement in the prominence of your lashes.

Having naturally voluminous lashes is something you’ve probably always dreamt of — with LATISSE®, that’s now become possible even if you weren’t genetically blessed. If you are a resident of the Tampa, FL, region and want to discuss getting LATISSE®, please schedule a consultation with Bespoke Rx or call us at (813) 203-6196. Your provider will review your medical history, speak to you about your concerns and see whether you are a good fit for this treatment.

Created by the pharmaceutical company Allergan, LATISSE® is the first FDA-approved prescription treatment for eyelash hypotrichosis (inadequate eyelashes).

The product is a 0.03 percent bimatoprost solution. Bimaporst is a structural analog of prostaglandins, lipids with hormone-like effects. This medication was originally used to treat glaucoma. However, doctors soon noticed that patients receiving this treatment were also growing thicker lashes — and that is when the idea to use it as an eyelash serum was born.

Patients using LATISSE® see significant improvement in the thickness, length and color of their lashes after approximately two months of once-a-day application — sometimes by over 100%! Researchers believe this product works by increasing the number of hairs in (and the duration of) the active hair growth phase.

The eyelash-boosting benefits of this product are not permanent. Once you stop using LATISSE®, your lashes will go back to their natural state.

How does LATISSE® work?

The active ingredient in LATISSE® called bimatoprost causes more hairs to remain in the anagen phase, which is when your hair grows. Bimatoprost also stimulates pigment-producing cells inside hair follicles to produce more pigment, leading to darker lashes. It even seems to increase the size of hair follicle components that control lash thickness.

Bimatoprost is a man-made drug that resembles and mimics prostaglandins, which regulate hair growth, among other things. But the exact mechanism of action behind bimatoprost remains a mystery.

While we may not know how bimatoprost stimulates hair growth, we do know that it is effective. LATISSE® has been clinically proven to create voluminous lashes within two months.

After your eyelashes have improved to the desired level — which can take 16 weeks in some cases — you can use the product less frequently to maintain your results. However, if you completely stop using the product, your lashes will revert to their former appearance.

Possible side effects

Side effects with LATISSE® are rare, especially with proper application. Reported side effects may include:

  • Dry, red and irritated eyes
  • Lowering of eye pressure
  • Permanent darkening of the iris
  • Temporary darkening of the eyelid
  • Hair growth around the eyes
  • Eye swelling and inflammation

It’s important to note that this list of side effects comes mostly from studies on bimatoprost when used to treat eye pressure, not when used to enhance eyelashes. When bimatoprost is applied directly to the eye, it can cause irritation, swelling and redness. Furthermore, it can cause darkening of the skin surrounding the eye due to fat loss as well as darkening of the colored part of the eye.

The side effects observed with LATISSE® use are generally less severe, likely because the product is applied in a thin layer on the upper eyelid rather than on the eye itself. Your provider will explain in detail how to minimize your risk of side effects during consultation.

How to use LATISSE®

How to use LATISSE®

During your consultation at Bespoke Rx, your provider will first check whether you are a good candidate to receive this treatment. They will look at your medical history to see if you may be allergic to any of the ingredients.

Once you receive your LATISSE® kit, you will get detailed instructions on how to use the product correctly. The product is applied using disposable applicators to the base of the upper eyelashes. It should not be applied directly to the lower lashes. The product transfers to the lower lashes automatically when you blink.

Do not use the product other than for its intended purpose or on someone else. Some patients claim this product has worked on their eyebrows as well; however, the FDA has not approved it for this purpose, and we know little about its safety and efficiency when used on eyebrow hairs.

Proper application is necessary to prevent complications and side effects. While most complications of improper use of LATISSE® are temporary, others like iris discoloration can be permanent.

LATISSE® treatments at Bespoke Rx are $189.

How does LATISSE® differ from other eyelash growth products?

LATISSE® is the first FDA-approved prescription treatment for growing longer, thicker, darker lashes for people with inadequate or sparse eyelashes. FDA regulations are stringent. When a medication receives FDA approval, that means its safety and efficacy have been scientifically studied in valid clinical trials. LATISSE® earned FDA approval in December 2008.

Does LATISSE® really work?

In a clinical study of 278 participants, 78 percent of LATISSE® users experienced a significant increase in overall eyelash prominence at week 16. Their lashes were 25 percent longer, 106 percent fuller and 18 percent darker.

Who should not use LATISSE®?

You should not use LATISSE® if you are allergic to any of its ingredients. Use LATISSE® under doctor care if you use prescription products for eye pressure problems

What happens if I stop using LATISSE®?

The benefits of LATISSE® last only while you use it as directed. If you stop using LATISSE®, your lashes are expected to return to their natural appearance over several weeks to months.

Can I use mascara while using LATISSE®?

Yes! You’re welcome to apply mascara for an extra boost while using LATISSE®.
